Koko
White Handed Gibbon
Koko…
Born at Cohanzick Zoo in 1989
His dad Petey was very loved by the guests and lived to be 47 (average lifespan is about 40)
Koko has a confident manner and is intelligent
He loves camp season; he will play with the kids in his window, swinging back and forth and high-fiving them against the glass
His favorite toy is his Mario ball
Favorite foods include mangoes and cooked sweet potatoes
He enjoys the enrichment items that his keeper gives him daily
Koko does not enjoy messy food or messy enrichment; he likes to stay very clean
Gibbons can catch birds midair and eat them; Koko does this often, his favorites are cardinals
Their main movement style is brachiation (or arm-swinging), but they can also run and walk upright on the ground
They love to stay high up in the canopy
Gibbons are one of the fastest primates; they can "fly" up to 40 feet through the air
They sleep sitting up, with their face resting on their bent knees
Gibbons sing duets with their partner, this is how they claim and maintain their territory
Live in the forests of Southeast Asia; they are endangered due to hunting, illegal pet trade, and deforestation
They eat fruit, leaves, insects, flowers, eggs (and birds)
