Meet the Sandhill Cranes

Here we can see the sandhill crane exhibit, home to Puck and One-Eyed Jack. Both of these Sandhill Cranes are female, with One Eyed Jack hatching on May 30th, 1992, and Puck hatching on June 4th, 1998. The sandhill crane is also the oldest species of bird, with fossils dating back to 2 million years ago. They have a wingspan of 6-7 feet and stand over 3 feet tall. Their migration route is from Mexico to Siberia, and they can fly 400 miles a day during that migration route. They dance during courtship, have 18 different vocalizations that can be heard up to 2.5 miles away, and can be found throughout prairies, marshes, fields, and bogs all across North America. Sandhill Cranes generally lay two eggs, which take 30 days to hatch, and they can live for 20-40 years.
