Meet PG, the African Crested Porcupine
Here we can see the African crested porcupine exhibit, home to PG . He was born here in 2018 to parents Stanley and Miss PrissStella, who have since moved on to a bigger zoo. African Crested Porcupines typically live around 20 years, and they are the largest porcupine in the world, weighing 25-70lbs. Their longest quills are 12-13 inches long and are not hollow. Porcupines also do not shoot their quills, but instead back into predators. The teeth of an African Crested Porcupine keep growing throughout their lives, so they collect bones to gnaw their teeth down. In Africa, they are considered a pest animal for destroying cultivated crops, and they typically live in the hilly and rocky habitats of North and Sub-saharan Africa, as well as some parts of Italy.
